Notes for Michael Shakley:

Michael SHAKELEY was an early settler of the south-eastern part of the township. His youngest son, John, (ed note John Snyder Shakeley) killed himself by hanging, leaving a wife and a large family.

The following from the 1895 History of Butler County gives the location of Michael's farm:

In the northeast corner, the PARKER farm, and south of it the farm now owned by John LEONARD and others, settled by John GIBSON . South of Bear Creek, William HUTCHISON, and next south Hugh GIBSON; east of his farm James KNOX. John MARTIN, west of Hugh GIBSON; James GIBSON on the D. WALKER farm; Michael SHAKELY, on the SHAKELY farm, with Samuel ERWIN on the west; Joseph

CAMPBELL on the CAMPBELL farm; Capt. Robert STOREY on the land now owned by his sons; Benjamin FLETCHER on the land now owned by his heirs; then beginning west of the CAMPBELL farm _____ REEP, and across Big Bear Creek, William COLLINS, and next west, Charles MCCAFFERTY, where his son John lives. The next settler north was John SHRYOCK, who erected a grist mill on Silver Creek; then came the farms of George and Philip DAUBENSPECK, James HAGGERTY, "Grubber Jimmy" SMITH, Samuel WESTMORE, _____ BURNS on the SHIRA farm, and William D. ALLEN. Thence going east, William DICKSON, and south James CONLY, on the MCMAHAN farm; east, the THOMPSON and ROBINSON farms (on the latter is the village of El Dorado); next farm north, James ALSWORTH; east William TURNER, "Little" Jimmy ALSWORTH, and William MCLAIN on the present Owen THOMAS farm. Thence going south, KNOX, and up the creek, James TURNER. John FOWLER settled the Stone House farm about 1814; he built the stone house and operated a saw mill and carding machine. Other early settlers were John JAMISON, where P. D . KELLY now lives; William FLEMING, on land now owned by D. BARTLEY and others; Henry SANDERSON, where John DAUBENSPECK now lives; and to the north, Master Archibald KELLY, the pioneer school- teacher.

CHAPTER XXVII

PERRY

Organization of the Township - The Pioneers - Their Work and the ir Hardships - Early Roads and Primitive Manufactures - The Pion eer Schools - Truby's Mill - The Borough of Queenstown.

About the year 1797 Isaac Steele came from Westmoreland county and took a tract of land in the woods of this township. He brought all of his goods and his family (consisting of his wife and two children) by means of two horses and pack saddles. Michael Shakeley had settled on a tract in the edge of Butler county a few years before and had made a small improvement which Steel had agreed to purchase. But when the later arrived he found that Shakeley had changed his mind, concluding that the price agreed upon was too little. The Steele family sought admission to the house, which was refused. Shakeley was inside and had the door fastened. Steele found a mallet and broke the door. A consultation ensued, during which Shakeley persuaded Steele to settle upon another tract.

From this we have a fairly good idea that Michael came to Perry Township few years prior to 1797, from Westmoreland Co. where he was in the 1790 census. Also we must of made up with the Steels because we married enough of them. (1)

Chapter IV "Pioneers" Taxables 1806, Slippery Rock Township Michael Shakeley had 400 acres, 1 cow, 2 horses or oxen with a value of $140 and a tax of $1.26. (This could have been Michael Sr. or Jr. since both owned farms. Tax was in the higher range charged in Slippery Rock Township so we can assume he was doing well).

On census 1820, near Parker Township, Michael is near Thomas Walley and Robert Story.

Information on the marriage to Elizabeth Allemong in the Ellenberger Family Tree Maker data base:

"after 1825 when Michael was 55, he married Elizabeth Allemong, daughter of Nicholas Allemong & Mary Magadalene Snyder, born on 8 Jul 1798. Elizabeth died on 8 Dec 1868 she was 78.

Notes for Rosanah Hockelberry:

From the Orphans Court Abstracts for March 1819:

"John Snow and Catherine his wife, late Catherine Hockelberry, sister of the heirs at law of George Hockelberry, late of Sugar Creek Township, Armstrong County, PA, deceased, presented petition stating that the late George Hockelberry died intestate and without children, leaving Jacob Hockleberry, his brother; Catherine Snow, petitioner; Mary, wife of Jacob Ditarer, Susan, wife of Nicolas Snow; Betsey, wife of Benjamin Douglas, all sisters of the late George Hockelberry, and Catherine, George, Polly, Rosanna, Betsy, Susan, Jacob, Henry and Sally Shakely, children of his deceased sister Rosanna, the former wife of Michael Shakely."

It goes on from there, but it does sort of point that Rosanna' s maiden name was Hockelberry and that she died before March 1819. (1)

Jacob Shoup's birthplace is reportedly Bucks County, PA ca 1745-1755. He moved to Westmoreland Co. PA about 1800. He was first married to Elizabeth Lightcap but apparently had a second wife, Ann Elizabeth (surname unknown) since Elizabeth Lightcap was born in 1746 and Jacob's last 7 children were born from 1798 to 1807 and could not have been children of his first wife. He had 14 children, all named in his will. (The name was often spelled in the Westmoreland baptismal record as "Shope".) He was a farmer in Unity Township, Westmoreland County.

His will names his wife Ann Elizabeth. It is widely held that he married Sarah Elizabeth Lightcap about 1776. He died in Westmoreland County, PA, 1810-1816. His will dated 1810 is recorded there in Vol 1 p 253. It is published in Abstracts of Wills of Westmoreland County on p 57. These children were named in his will: Solomon, Jacob, John, Henry, Elizabeth, Veronica, Sarah, Catherine, Mary Magdelena, Susannah, Leah and Rachel, the last three believed to be of his second marriage. John m Polly Aukerman, and several Aukermans, Lightcaps, Stockbergers and Hartzells appear in early Westmoreland Co, PA tax records. Elizabeth married John Cole; Veronica m John Hartzel[l]; Sarah m Frederick Stockberger; Catherine m Henry Baer/Bear; Mary M. m John Jacob Stockberger, son of Matthias; and some believe Michael m Mary Keeler/Kaler/Keller. Henry Shoup may be the one who died in Fremont OH and who appears in Sandusky Heritage by Grace Leubke of Elmore, OH.

It is quite likely that the several Jacob Shoups have been confused over the years, and that some of the DAR records are suspect. For example, the DAR #477481 of Geraldine Hartzell Reynolds states that Jacob Shoup b 1780 m Sarah Downing. Proof should be forthcoming.

See History of Hancock Co IL 1880 relative to Michael Shoup and wife Mary, and their son Abraham b 1808 Crawford Co PA. Also Portrait and Biographical Record of Hancock, McDonough and Henderson Cos IL, Chicago 1894.

The History of Westmoreland Co PA, vol 3, 1906 on p 494 tells about the SHUPE family of Berks County PA, John Shupe, born 1750, died 1835, and three brothers who settled in Westmoreland Co PA. John Shupe married Mary Messer 1756, and had issue: William, Elizabeth, John, Samuel Mary, Isaac. (1)

Information from Randy Barnes dated July 19, 2000:

Been looking through my files and found more information. Sarah Rebecca Lightcap was from my grandmothers submission to DAR. But have found other sources that her name was also referenced as Sarah Elizabeth or Ann Elizabeth. Her birthdate was around 1756+- Bucks Co, last name on some post were Leibkeipy. Her Husband m 1776 was Jacob Shoup born 1755 in Bucks Co and died 1818 in Westmoreland Co. They had the following 13 children Susanna,Leah, Henry, Rachel, Solomon, Jacob, john, mary, Catherine, Sarah, Elizabeth, Veronica, and Michael (my connection). Jacob was a Captain in the 3rd Battalion Bucks Co Association 1777 in 1780 was

Captain of the 4th 2nd Battalion. From posts a lot of confusion about Sarah Rebecca Ann Elizabeth ??? lightcap would be of interest to clear up.

109. Catherine, born 90; died Unknown.

Notes for Michael Shakley:

Daniel M. Shakley (great grandson of Michael) in the Beers History of Armstrong Co. states as follows:

Mr. Shakley's great-grandparents were the first of the family in this country. Coming from Ireland, they first settled near Fredericksburg, Va., thence coming to Perry township, Armstrong Co., Pa., in pioneer days, and settling on a farm of 160 acres which is still owned by their descendants.

There are conflicting records; some sources say that Michael Shakley was born in Germany and other sources claim Scotland and Ireland as his birthplace. Multiple sources claim Michael's father to be George.

From William Shakely:

While in Armstrong County, Michael married Mary. He remained in that county until his death in 1817. His will left the bulk of his estate to his youngest son Henry, and granted Mary the right to remain at the family farm with Henry. Bequest were made to his son Michael, his daughters Catharine Swisher, Phobe Mung, and Mary Harrold, and to children of his daughter Peggy (Margaretha), wife or widow of John Sowrs . Michael was presumably buried in the family cemetery at the Shakely homestead. While the cemetery is presently maintained, his grave marker is not visible.

Shows Michael's date of death 16 June 1817 in Sugar Creek TWp. , Armstrong, PA

Has Michael Shakely born Sept. 21, 1771 father George Shakely born in Scotland in 1740.

Notes for Catherine:

Catherine was the wife of Michael Schaecktele; there is no documentation that Michael Schechtele and Michael Shekley is the same person.

Johann Michael Schaechtele and Catharina have the following children listed as baptised in Trinity Lutheran Church, Redding, Bucks County, PA Anna Margetha b 1760: Samuel b 1762: Anna Maria : b 1764; Wilhelmina b 1767: Georg Michael b 1769; Johann Georg ; b 1771. The birthdate for Georg Michael does not match the birthdate on Miichael Shakeley in the Shakley Cemetery buried beside Rosannah White Shakeley. Interesting though it does match the baptism date for Wilhelmina Schaechtele. (1)

PAGE 534 (Please note the spelling of Shakley as Sheckly. This also occurs in one of the 1830 census. Elizabeth was illerate)

Adjoining the Campbell-McCutchen tract on the north is one of the same shape, 459 acres and 101 perches, contiquous to which on the north, chiefly is what is now Brady's Bend township, in another 456 acres and 108 perches, for both of which patents were granted to Charles Campbell, and the two together were named "Campbelltown" on which Nicholas Allimong and his family were early settlers, which Campbell, in Allimong's lifetime agreed to convery to him, and which he did convery to his executors, Jacob Allimong and Johathan King, in trust for his legatees, August 9, 1809, and those executors the same day conveyed the southern tract, or southern half of "Campbelltown," and part of the northern, thus, 200 acres by King to Jacob Allimong, 100 acres to Elizabeth Shectley, and 200 acres to Susanna Wiles. Mrs. Wiles, her husband, conveyed 118 acres and 158 perches of her purpart to Frederick Wiles, September 21, 1841 for $400, which he conveyed to Willam McCrea, May 14, 1842 for $1,250, and 117 acres and 40 perches to Samuel S. Sanderson, April 16. 1851, for $1,900, which by his will dated January 15, and registered May 21, 1879, devised to his son James. Mrs. Shectley conveyed her purpart to David Sheakley, October 1, 1852 for $850.

Note Susan Wiles was Elizabeth's sister.

OBIT ELIZABETH ALLAMONG SHAKELY 1868

Died on the 8th December 1868, Mrs. Elizabeth Shakely several miles distant from Fairview, Butler County, Pa aged 78 years an d 5 months.

Mrs. Shakely was, by baptism, added to the Christian Church in her infancy, and in early life became a communicant member of the German Reformed Church, by the solemn rite of confirmation, in which she continued to the last moment of her earthly life, a consistent and faithful member.

She was married to Henry Shakely, who, about 46 years ago, was badly hurt at the raising of a building, which shortly afterwards resulted in his death. She bore him eight children, five sons and three daughters. Only one of these preceded her to the eternal world.

Mother Shakely was a true and devoted member of the Church. Her walk and conversation, during her long life were such as became a follower of Jesus. With her faith firmly fixed in her Saviour she delighted in His services, and rested all her hopes in Him. She forsook not the assembling of herself with God's people in His earthly courts, until infirmity of old age and the paralyzing strokes of palsy confined her to her room and bed. When she could no more attend church, it was our pleasure at her request to go to her home, on the day of communion, that she, too, might have her soul fed and nourished by the crucified body and shed blood of Christ. But now she is gone and we can visit her no more.

Mother Shakely was widely known, and on the 10th of December her body was conveyed to its silent tomb, followed by a long procession of mourners and friends.

(A line or so unreadable)

She was good ?(faithful mother). Her surviving sons and daughters have great cause to keep her in grateful remembrance, for having cared for them so well and kept them together during her widowhood. To their credit be it also said, that they shared neither pains, trouble nor cost to give their aged and respected mother the very best ?(nursing) and care, until she fell asleep in Jesus.

Mother Shakely bore her sickness, which was protracted, with Christian patience and entire resignation to the will of her heavenly Father. Her posterity consists of eight children, sixty-seven grandchildren, and sixty-nine great-grandchildren, or whom twenty-eight have already departed this life.

The longest day has its end, and the most healthy and active must, one day, be laid in the cold and lonely tomb, until the morning of the resurrection. "Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is that I may know how frail I am."

The funeral address was based on Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." J.S.S.

Death date taken from DAR Patriot Index. (says he was born in Holland) -- However, that does not seem correct.
