Descendants of Andrew Johanson Rehn

Generation No. 1

1. ANDREW JOHANSON1 REHN1 was born 19 Dec 1820 in Knatte, Vastergotland, Sweden1, and died 20 Feb 1900 in Freehold, Warren Co. Pa. or Busti, New York1. He married ANNA STINA ADAMSON1 in <Sweden>. She was born 04 Jan 1822 in Sandhem, Vastergotland, Sweden1, and died 04 Apr 1888 in Freehold, Warren Co. Pa. Busti, New York1.

Notes for ANDREW JOHANSON REHN:

The family emigrated from Sorndden, Kölingared Parish, Västergötland, Sweden in the year 1866 to Jamestown, NY. They landed in New York City July 5, 1866. The trip took three weeks and they had to provide their own food for themselves and six children - Hilda Maria 14, Carl Reinhold 12, Johanna Elizabeth 9, Johan Gottfrid 8, Josefina Charlotta 4, and Alma Carolina an infant. Anna Carolina died at eight months of age and is buried in the Fluvanna, NY Cemetery. Another son, Edward, was born and buried in Kölingared Parish, Sweden. Their last child, Otto Simon, was born April 3, 1869 in Jamestown, NY.

The 1875 copy of the Jamestown, NY City Directory lists Andrew J. Ren as a laborer residing at 33 Willard Street. He later purchased a farm in Freehold Township PA.

In 1880, Johnson and Anna were residing in Freehold, Warren, Pennsylvania (Freehold, Warren, Pennsylvania Family History Library Film 1255200 NA Film Number T9-1200 Page Number 122A). Sons Charles and Otto are living with them.

Per Aunt Marie, daughter of Charles and Hattie Rein, "Andrew Johnson Rehn died when Rhue was 3 weeks old. He said 'A new life has come and now I must go.'"

Generation No. 2

2. CHARLES JOHNSON2 REIN (ANDREW JOHANSON1 REHN)1 was born 16 Jul 1854 in Kylingared, Vastergotland, Sweden1, and died 13 Aug 1924 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York1. He married HATTIE LOUISE NELSON1 08 Feb 18891, daughter of CARL NELSON and ANNA NARBOM. She was born 28 Dec 1861 in Taby, Ostergotland, Sweden1, and died 19 Dec 1925 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York1.

Notes for CHARLES JOHNSON REIN:

Aunt Marie (2002) told Marilyn Walkerman that both of her grandfathers lived with Charles and Hattie after their wives died. Probably the young boys, Melvin, Arthur and Harold, heard mostly Swedish used at home during this time as their parents spoke with the grandfathers, even though Charles and Hattie spoke English well at this time.

Other reflections of Aunt Marie:

"When Mother washed, Anna and I took the buggy to the spring to fill milk cans with water."

"Anna was a tom boy. On her birthday she and the neighbor children used the buggy for rides up and down the driveway."

"Father was a progressive farmer. He owned the first reaper on the hill and also had the first silo. However the farm was too small (40 acres) for such a large family.. He was also a good business man. He would go to Jamestown and leave a few potatoes for the housewives to try. He’d say "If you like them, I’ll be back next week with some to sell to you". In the end he was forced to sell the farm because of asthma and moved the family, with the exception of Melvin and Arthur who were married, to Jamestown. In 1924, Father had a stroke. He was independent to the end. He wanted his hand tied to a cane so he could walk and he cried when he had to be fed."

Charles and Hattie lived on a farm near Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania until 1917 when they moved to Jamestown, NY.

In 1900, Charles and Hattie were residing in Freehold, Warren County, Pennsylvania (ED 126 Sheet 3).

Hattie immigrated from Sweden with her parents to the U.S. in 1871 (per 1900 US Census).

Hattie and her twin received some schooling as Aunt Marie says her mother Hattie (Hedda) spoke unaccented English as an adult. The twins and their mother probably spent some years working as domestics for English families in Jamestown.

Notes for CARL HAROLD REIN:

"Death of C. Harold Rein

C. Harold Rein, of Lakewood, who died at the W.C.A. Hospital after a rather long illness on Monday, was a wonderfully important part of the retail furniture business of Jamestown for many years. In most all of those years he was associated with his brother, A. Rheu Rein, in the Field & Wright Company, but a little over six years ago they both retired from that company and joined in the formation of Cornell & Reins.

Both brothers have been held in the highest esteem as retail merchants and furniture men throughout this area. Harold Rein was called into service in the retail division of the Chamber of Commerce and in the Chamber itself to serve on the boards and as an officer.

With all his concern for the operation of important businesses and in mercantile groups, Mr. Rein found time to serve his community in civic and public affairs. He was one of those highly regarded business men who entered politics to serve on the Jamestown City Council at one time and gave generously of his time and energy to this important work. His long attention to church and civic affairs contributed richly to the development of this community.

Mr. Rein was a notable member of a family which has taken part in the growth and progress of the Jamestown area for many years."

Notes for THEODORE JOHN HOLMLUND:

Ted had the misfortune to lose both of his parents early in childhood. He was raised on a farm near Hamburg by an aunt and uncle. For years one of his duties was to milk and feed the cows before breakfast and before going to school in the mornings.

God conferred on Ted a beautiful tenor voice and a deep desire to study medicine. After completing his pre-medical studies at the University of Buffalo, he graduated from medical school in 1929. He financed his way through school singing in church choirs on Sunday mornings. He attained the distinction of being the highest paid church soloist in the city of Buffalo.

After completing his internship at the Lady of Victory hospital in Lackawanna, he settled in Cattaraugus, where he practiced until 1943, when he moved to Jamestown. After Worl War II began, he attempted to enlist in the Navy, but was not accepted when x-rays revealed some healed tuberculosis scars.

In 1953, he suffered a severe coronary attack. Subsequently, he had many painful recurrences which culminated in open-heart surgery in 1966. While he survived the open heart surgery he was continued to be bothered by coronary problems.

Away from the worries of his work, he took great delight in looking after the welfare of the Jamestown Falcons. Many people will testify to the happiness he received from taking his gang of boys to the ball games.

Ted was always devoted to his patients and their welfare was his chief concern. As a colleague, he was serious, concerned and totally reliable. To know him was to have a friend. A friend, Dr. Marvin Seigel, once said of Ted, "He was my good friend, unassuming and always thoughtful and would constantly state that he thought he and I were very much alike. I find that a warm and kindly thought."

Ted died on July 4th, 1973 in his office in Jamestown after practicing medicine for over 30 years.
