Where did you live while growing up?  I lived in West Monterey, Pennsylvania, which is a small town in the western part of Pennsylvania. The town, then, had less than fifty homes; it is probably even smaller now. It was "nestled" between two hills along the Allegheny River; the Pennsylvania Railroad ran along the river, too, so there was, usually, barely room for a row of houses on each side of the tracks.

What was your house like?  We lived in a duplex; there were three rooms on the first floor and two bedrooms on the second floor. The walls were thin so a loud conversation in one "home" could be heard in the other. There was a basement under the house consisting of two "rooms." In the front room, we had a hot plate to heat the water that was used in our gasoline washing machine.  In the back room, we stored "hundreds" of cans of fruits, vegetables, jellies, etc. We had a double (one for each of the duplex) outside toilet, which was located on the edge of the back "yard." A well with a hand-operated pump was located in the middle of the back yard, also. The house was heated with a coal stove; gas lights provided excellent light for reading. We did not own the house; we rented it for $8.00 per month.

What was your school like?  There were two school building for this little town. Each building had only one room. The buildings were about one-half mile apart. Grades one through four met in the one building; grades five through eight met in the other building. (There was one teacher for each building.) The buildings were heated with coal stoves. Each building had two outdoor toilets--one for the girls and one for the boys. During recess, one of the pupils walked to the spring about a quarter of a mile away to "fetch" a pail of water. We used a "common" drinking cup.

What is your favorite memory?  I have reflected on this question rather lengthily, and I can't recall any "favorite" memory; however, these are those that I fondly remember:

Observing my father read his Bible.

The way my brother managed to acquire the extra piece of pie that was unclaimed when I left for college.

Holding the lantern so that there would be sufficient light for my father to see to replace shoes for the horses and grease the mail wagon each evening.

"Evacuating" a horse from one side of the barn while hearing moving ice from the flooding river rubbing along the other side of the barn.

Carrying water from the pump to the "cellar" (basement) for our weekly laundry.
