Descendants of Johan Johansson Wittberg Generation
No. 1 1. JOHAN
JOHANSSON1 WITTBERG
was born Notes for JOHAN JOHANSSON WITTBERG: Excerpt from letter from Arne Winter, "As you may remember, I promised during my stay in I think I had better advance some information...Prior to the middle of the 19th century, only townspeople, professional men and soldiers used family names. Country people, farmers, farmhands, and servants used their Christian names and their patronymic, indicating the name of their father. For example, Johan Johansson = Johan, the son of Johan, or Anna Mattsdotter = Anna, the daughter of Mathias. As about twenty of the most usual Christian names make out perhaps 90% of the whole, this jungle can be followed up only with the utmost care. However, there is no doubt at all about Johan Gabrielsson Holmlund and his father Gabriel Johansson. For the generation prior to Gabriel there is a missing link from 1749 to 1755. The first known forefather, the father of Gabriel
Johansson, appears to be a soldier and cavalryman, Johan Johansson
Wittenberg (he also used the form Wittberg) born perhaps about 1710, who
lived at the Vaestanfjaerd manor after which the parish of Vaestanfjaerd
has its name. The
Swedish-Finnish army was organized with a reserve of soldiers, who in
time of peace worked as farmhands on farms that had a contract with the
state for this purpose. Johan
was one of these reserve-calvary men.
Johan married Maria Michelsdotter on Gabriel Johansson, in that case, for reasons of his own, has entirely dropped the family name of his father. All his life he uses only his name and patronymic. As he was also all his life a farmers help on different farms, I consider it quite natural." No. 3 3. JOHAN GABRIELSSON3 HOLMLUND (GABRIEL2 JOHANSSON, JOHAN JOHANSSON1 WITTBERG) was born October 10, 1791 in Braennboda, Vaestanfjaerd, Finland, and died May 09, 1836. He married CATHARINA JOHANSDOTTER, daughter of JOHAN ISAACSON and MARIA OLOFSDOTTER. She was born July 08, 1793 in Kobbole, Finland, and died April 25, 1835 in Kobbole, Finland. Notes for JOHAN GABRIELSSON HOLMLUND: Excerpt from letter from Arne Winter, Helsinki, Finland, dated January 25, 1966: "Johan Gabrielsson was a tailor and adopted the name of Holmlund at the age of about twenty, probably when starting as a professional man. Holmlund means literally "Island-Grove". Other people have adopted the same name, but it is not too common. "Holmberg" and "Holmstrom" are more widely used. It is Swedish, of course, the country-language in southwestern Finland. Both Johan and his wife died of pulmonary tuberculosis, at that time and even later a plague in our country. I am told that there are still Holmlunds in Vasestanfjaerd, which is, as before, a quiet place, sparsely populated by farmers, fishermen, and professional people connected with these trades."

She was born April 11, 1905 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, and died January 05, 2000 in Newton, New Jersey. He married (2) HELEN ARLENE REIN January 15, 1955 in Lakewood, New York, daughter of MELVIN REIN and HILDA JOHNSON. She was born July 15, 1925 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York, and died September 26, 1975 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. Notes for THEODORE JOHN HOLMLUND: Ted had the misfortune to lose both of his parents early in childhood. He was raised on a farm near Hamburg by an aunt and uncle. For years one of his duties was to milk and feed the cows before breakfast and before going to school in the mornings. God conferred on Ted a beautiful tenor voice and a deep desire to study medicine. After completing his pre-medical studies at the University of Buffalo, he graduated from medical school in 1929. He financed his way through school singing in church choirs on Sunday mornings. He attained the distinction of being the highest paid church soloist in the city of Buffalo. After completing his internship at the Lady of Victory hospital in Lackawanna, he settled in Cattaraugus, where he practiced until 1943, when he moved to Jamestown. After Worl War II began, he attempted to enlist in the Navy, but was not accepted when x-rays revealed some healed tuberculosis scars. In 1953, he suffered a severe coronary attack. Subsequently, he had many painful recurrences which culminated in open-heart surgery in 1966. While he survived the open heart surgery he was continued to be bothered by coronary problems.
Away from the worries of his work, he took great delight in looking after the welfare of the Jamestown Falcons. Many people will testify to the happiness he received from taking his gang of boys to the ball games. Ted was always devoted to his patients and their welfare was his chief concern. As a colleague, he was serious, concerned and totally reliable. To know him was to have a friend. A friend, Dr. Marvin Seigel, once said of Ted, "He was my good friend, unassuming and always thoughtful and would constantly state that he thought he and I were very much alike. I find that a warm and kindly thought." Ted died on July 4th, 1973 in his office in Jamestown after practicing medicine for over 30 years.
