Notes for Carl Harold Rein:

"Death of C. Harold Rein

C. Harold Rein, of Lakewood, who died at the W.C.A. Hospital after a rather long illness on Monday, was a wonderfully important part of the retail furniture business of Jamestown for many years. In most all of those years he was associated with his brother, A. Rheu Rein, in the Field & Wright Company, but a little over six years ago they both retired from that company and joined in the formation of Cornell & Reins.

Both brothers have been held in the highest esteem as retail merchants and furniture men throughout this area. Harold Rein was called into service in the retail division of the Chamber of Commerce and in the Chamber itself to serve on the boards and as an officer.

With all his concern for the operation of important businesses and in mercantile groups, Mr. Rein found time to serve his community in civic and public affairs. He was one of those highly regarded business men who entered politics to serve on the Jamestown City Council at one time and gave generously of his time and energy to this important work. His long attention to church and civic affairs contributed richly to the development of this community.

Mr. Rein was a notable member of a family which has taken part in the growth and progress of the Jamestown area for many years."

The Benoni Jones house was the only house in the area that was fortified with pickets. On May 13, 1704, a party of Indians and French under the command of Sieur de Montigny (during Queen Anne's War 1703-1713) attacked the Jones house in which all of the area's inhabitants had assembled for cover. Of the 33 persons in the house, 19 were killed, 3 escaped, 8 were rescued later and 3 were carried off. Benoni Jones and two of his sons, Ebenezer (age six) and Jonathan (age one), were slain. Eight year old Benjamin Jones was scalped but later escaped. Ester was kidnepped and taken to Notre-Dame, Montreal, Canada where she died after being tormented by Jesuit priests trying to convert her. (2)

Notes for Joseph Loomis:

Joseph was a woolen-draper. Several sources say he sailed from London, England 11 April 1638 on the ship "Susan and Ellen," arriving in Boston, Massachusetts 17 July 1638. Other sources claim he probably came to Windsor in the summer or autumn of 1639 in company with Rev. Ephraim Huet, who arrived at Windsor 17 August 1639. Records indicate he stayed about a year in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Town records of Windsor, Connecticut show that on 2 February 1640 he was granted 21 acres from the Plantation adjoining Farmington River on the west side of teh Connecticut River. This acreage included the site of the first English settlement made in Connecticut. Also, there were several large tracts of land on the east side of the Connecticut River, partly from the town and partly purchased. His house was near the mouth of the Farmington River on "The Island." That area was the "The Island" because when raining, the Connecticut River overflowed, causing that area to temporarily become an island. (1)

Notes for James Chilton:

James Chilton, a tailor by trade, was the oldest Mayflower passenger, and one of the first to die after reaching the New World. He was born and raised in Canterbury, Kent, England and around 1600 moved to Sandwich, Kent.

By July 1615, and probably as early as 1610, James, his wife, and at least some of his children were living in Leyden, Holland. On 28 April 1619, James Chilton and his daughter Isabella were caught in an anti-Arminian riot and James was hit in the head with a brick, and required the services of the town surgeon, Jacob Hey.

He came on the Mayflower with his wife and daughter, Mary. James and his wife died the first winter, leaving their daughter orphaned; she probably joined with the household of Myles Standish.

Isabella, another daughter of James, remained in Holland in 1620 but came to Plymouth at a later time.
