Harry Alfred Holmlund 

1900-1995

 

Harry Alfred Holmlund was born November 7, 199, in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, to Anton Walfrid and Matilda Holmlund.  He died June 16, 1995 in Green Valley, Pima County, Arizon.  He married Lucretia Dorsey Owings, a widow with two boys, Edward Langton Burwell and William Owings Burwell.  Lucretia was born about 1900 in Maryland and died about 1970.  He married Frances Sample about 1971.

Harry attended Dartmouth, graduating in the class of 1924.

Harry was living was living in Buffalo and working as an accountant for a car company. He relocated out to Oregon with the car company as a job promotion. There he met Lucretia Dorsey Owings Burwell, a widow with two children: Edward Langdon Burwell and William Owings Burwell. Lucrectia's late husband, Edward Landon Burwell, had been killed when he fell off a water tower.

They owned a hardware store in Seattle. They moved back to Buffalo and on to East Aurora, New York. Then they sold everything to buy Scrantons Bookstore in Rochester, living in their car for month.

Harry was extremely successful in business. He adopted both of Lucretia's sons, but insisted they keep their father's surname (Burwell). Both boys attended Exter Prep School and then went on to Princeton.

Harry retired to Cape Cod in 1970. Lucretia died about that time.

In 1971 Harry remarried Frances (Lula) Sample, a single woman, who at 66 years of age, had never married.

Harry had prostrate cancer while in his 60's. He was on medication that helped keep the cancer away, but finally became ill in 1992 from complications. He died of kidney failure.

Harry loved to fly fish and play tennis. After marrying Lulu at age 70, took up horseback riding and golf.

Harry's granddaughter, Pam Burwell Benton, remembers Harry as a kind and wonderful man. When she was a child, he had a doll made for her by Madame Alexander, whom he knew personally.

Obituary, Green Valley News and Sun, Wednesday, June 21, 1995:

Harry Alfred Holmlund, 94, of Green Valley, and formerly of Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., died June 16. He often spent summers in Falmouth, Mass.

He is survived by his stepson, William O. Burwell of Massachusetts; and sister, Thelma Martyr of New York; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Dartmouth College.

Private services were held.

Arrangements were handled by G.V. Mortuary & Memorial Gardens.
