John Wallace Linamen

Eyla Belle Farringer

John Wallace Linamen, son of James Henry and Myra Adams Linamen, was born May 01, 1898 in West Monterey, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and died November 03, 1970 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California.  He married Eyla Belle Farringer about 1920 in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Frederick Farringer and Jennie Baum.  She was born February 25, 1902 in Hill City, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and died November 24, 1998 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The homestead on which Eyla was raised was on an oil lease.

John and Eyla met at church. Eyla admired John for his strong faith and sound character. They were married in the parsonage at a church in Franklin in 1920. There were so many preachers in attendance that Eyla told her mother it was like a revival. After they were married, they lived with relatives until they finished building a new house. John made a living working in the coal mine and delivering mail. Their son Harold was born in 1921 followed by Gene in 1926. At the age of 36, John was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. They had to worry about finances and having enough food for the boys. It was a very difficult time for them, having to be patient and depend on the faith they held so dear. As a result of having lived through the Depression, Eyla was frugal the rest of her life. They moved to California in 1956 to be nearer to Gene and his family.

Eyla was known for her strong will and determination. She was primarily self-educated, being an avid reader. While only receiving the equivalent of an eighth grade education, she loved to learn. Ironically, her first memory of school was getting mad and leaving for home. Eyla cared intensely for people and was infamous for a never ending sense of humor. She was known as a woman of prayer and spent a large part of her day praying for all of her family members. She had been a Sunday school teacher over the years and nurtured many young people in the church. Eyla's mind was active into her nineties.
