Descendants of Johan Theobald Baum

Generation No. 1

1. JOHAN THEOBALD1 BAUM was born May 15, 1693 in Alsace, Lorraine, Germany1, and died August 27, 1762 in , Berks, Pennsylvania1. He married ANNA MARGARETH BLIMBOTT1 November 07, 1719 in Evangelisch, Frankenthal, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany1. She was born 1695, and died 1761 in Berks, Pennsylvania1.

Notes for JOHAN THEOBALD BAUM:

It is not known when Theobald immigrated to Pennsylvania. The first record of him is found in a letter of reference dated 27 January 1731. Theobald's name appears on a Warrant for 250 acres of land in Philadelphia County in 1734. This land became part of Berks County when it was formed in 1752. Theobald's name, written as Dewalt Boom, is listed among the First Berks County Taxables from about 1752 in Alsace Township.

Theobald was naturalized in Philadelphia on 10 and 11 April 1741. He took the Sacrament on 4 February 1740 and his name was written Theowald Bawm, Philadelphia County.

The names of Dewald Baum and Jacob Spengler head the list of signatories on a petition responsible for the formation of Alsace Township. The petition was presented to the Philadelphia County Quarter Session Court on 2 December 1744. Those who signed the petition "represented that a sufficient quantity of land had been settled, that the inconvenience under which they had labored entitled them to erect a separate township, and that since the first settlers had come from a place called Elsas, in Germany, they desired that the new township should be called by that name. The petition was granted on 3 March 1745.

The first church in the neighborhood was built in 1737 on land donated by the Spangler and Baum families. Built of logs by the exiled Alsatian Protestants who settled there, the services were conducted in both French and German. It was a union of Lutheran and Reformed churches and because of the poverty prevailing in the congregation and the scarcity of regular pastors, wandering preachers were employed to conduct the services. In the church graveyard was found the grave of Theobald Baum. The following is the recorded inscription:

Here rests the body of a wise, peace loving Member,

his name

JOHAN THEOBALD BAUM

He was born May 15, 1693

He slept in peace August 27, 1762

Theobald's will was recorded at Reading, Berks County. Signed on 25 August 1761, the will was probated on 9 October 1762. He signed it by his mark which was probably due to illness or age since in other documents bearing his name the German signature is very plain handwriting.

Notes for JOHAN PETER BAUM:

Peter came to America and settled in Pennsylvania with his father by 1731. Peter lived all of his adult life in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was living in November 1795 when he was mentioned in a deed for land in Berks County.

Peter raised his family in Reading, Berks County. He was living in Reading by about 1752. In 1767, Peter was listed on the Reading Town tax returns. His occupation was listed as turner. He was taxed for 2 houses, 2 lots, 3 horses and 2 cattle. Peter was taxed as a farmer in 1768. By 1780, he was living in Cumru Township, Berks County and was taxed for 163 acres. He was taxed for 162 acres in the Cumru Township in 1781, 1784, and 1785. In the 1790 census, Peter and Anna Maria were living in Cumru Township probably with their son Johannes and his family.

Notes for ANNA MARIA DRIES:

Anna Maria was probably the Anna Maria Dries who, at the age of 11, arrived in Philadelphia from Germany on the ship Mary of Dublin on 29 September 1733.

According to her death record, Anna Maria was the mother of six children, four sons and two daughters. Two sons and one daughter predeceased her.

He married ELIZABETH MADERIA?, daughter of NICHOLAS MADERIA? and ? WANNEMACHER. She was born Abt. 1756, and died Unknown.

Notes for JOHANNES BAUM:

John was raised in Reading, Berks County. He moved with his father to Cumru Township, Berks County by 1780. Since he was not listed as a single freeman on the 180 tax list, he had probably married by that time. He is listed on acres the 1781, 1784, and 1785 Cumru Township tax lists along with his father. John and his family probably lived with his father and were probably included in the enumeration of Peter's household in 1790. In 1795, when his son Jacob was baptized, John was still living in Cumru Township. John and his family were enumerated in Cumru Township in the 1800 census.

John and his family moved to Upper Mahantongo Township, Berks County probably shortly after 1800 which would become part of the newly created Schuylkill County in 1811. He purchased 268 acres of land from John Klinger, Esq. That tract of land was part of what was known as Spread Eagle Manor. It is now situated west of the present village of Klingerstown in the western portion of Upper Mahantongo Township. In 1807, John and his wife deeded some land to their son Peter. John may have been the 1 male over 45 years of age enumerated with his son Henry's household in the 1820 census.

Notes for AARON SHAFFER:

Aaron Shaffer was reared under the parental roof, and learned the details of farm work at an early age. He obtained a good, practical education in the public schools of the home locality and by applying himself as he grew older, and he lived at home, working for his parents, until he became of age. When quite young he began to burn lime, which he hauled to the different farmers summer and winter, after that became the custom. In the early days, when he burned as much as 28,000 or 30,000 bushels in a year, the farmers came for the lime, doing their own hauling, but it soon became the custom for the lime burner to deliver it. When he came to carry on this business less extensively, Mr. Shaffer averaged 12,000 bushels annually for ten years. For a number of years Mr. Shaffer furnished the horses to the State of Pennsylvania for use at the annual encampments of the National Guard, held at Mount Gretna and Gettysburg.

When Mr. Shafer's grandfather, Michael, owned the farm, which has been in the family name at least since 1830, its acreage was much

greater, between 250 and 300 acres, extending down to Urban. When Aaron Shafer bought the homestead it comprised only ninety acres, to which he has added until he now has 130. The present house and barn were erected by William T. Shaffer, the latter about 1866-67, and there is still standing on the tract a log tenant house built by Michael Shafer. Aaron Shaffer is a progressive but conservative member of his community, respected and trusted by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He has been a valuable citizen, having served many years as a member of the township school board, and for a number of years past he has been an overseer of the poor. Politically he is a Democrat, and in religion he is a Lutheran, belonging to St. Paul's Church; he was deacon for many years, later an elder, and since 1900 has been a trustee.

In 1882 Mr. Shafer married Lizzie Baum, daughter of Henry D. and Catherine (Moyer) Baum, of Mahantango township, Schuylkill Co., Pa., and they have had five children: Jennie M., who married Charles Engel and lives at Herndon, Pa.; William H., born May 31, 1887; Charles D., born Feb. 2, 1889; Mamie C.; and George R.

10. JOEL6 BAUM (LEVI5, JOHN4, JOHANNES3, JOHAN PETER2, JOHAN THEOBALD1) was born September 05, 1853 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and died December 02, 1920 in Venango County, Pennsylvania. He married (1) ELIZABETH JANE STARR Bet. 1870 - 1880, daughter of DANIEL STARR and CHRISTINA MITCHELL. She was born April 03, 1853 in Ninevah, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and died July 03, 1926 in Cranberry, Venango County, Pennsylvania. He married (2) GOLDIE Aft. 1889 in North Dakota. She died Unknown.

Notes for JOEL BAUM:

Joel is found residing with his parents, Levi and Rebecca in the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census Records, in Ashland, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

In 1880, Joel is found residing with his wife, Elizabeth, and four children (David, Tena, Rebecca and Jennie Mae), in Ashland, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

Joel is listed in the Ashland Township, Clarion County, 1889 Register of resident males subject to military duty.

Joel's granddaughter, Eyla Farringer recalled that after Joel and Eliza were married, they bought a large farm in North Dakota and became quite wealthy. Eliza brought the children back to Pennsylvania (she evidently didn't like North Dakota). Eyla said that Joel supposedly remarried 4 or 5 times, perhaps simultaneously. One of Joel's wives' names was "Goldie". Goldie was killed when the horses ran away with the buggy and threw her to her death.

The 1900 census records Joel residing in North Dakota (Dover Township, Griggs County). He has Tina Baum, age 23 and Harvey L. Baum (listed as a son--by Goldie), age 2 (born November 1897 in North Dakota). He also has 5 servants residing with him. A neighbor of Joel's from Pennsylvania, Mel Fye, recalls Joel telling him stories of his farming days in North Dakota. Mel remembered Joel saying that sometimes the snow was so heavy that he had to tie a rope from the house to the barn door to find his way back in the blizzards.

He came back to Pennsylvania years later and bought a nice home near where his children lived (who were not as well off as he). He drilled several oil wells on the property and made quite a lot of money. Eyla remembered Joel having a housekeeper (quite a luxury) and a player piano. She also recalled him dressing very fine, being very handsome and driving a big car. When he came back from the west he always gave his grandchildren each a $5 bill (it seemed like a lot to them then).

The 1920 U.S. Census records Joel residing in Cranberry Township (Venango County, Pennsylvania--p. 24) with son Harvey and granddaughter Eyla Farringer (Eyla is also listed in the 1920 Census as living with her parents, Fred and Jennie Farringer).

Joel is buried in St. Mark's cemetery, reportedly with a very large tombstone, and is some distance from Elizabeth's grave site.

Notes for ELIZABETH JANE STARR:

The 1900 census records Elizabeth living in Pennsylvania (Ashland Township, Clarion County), separately from Joel in North Dakota. Lula and Clem are residing with Elizabeth. Also residing with Elizabeth is a grandson, Lee, born in July, 1898 who was born in Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth suffered from diabetes when she was older, and as a result, had a leg amputated.

In the 1920 census, Elizabeth is living in Ashland ( p. 13) with her son, Clem. She states that she is 66 years old and widowed (this census was taken in January and Joel did not die until the following December).

He was born June 23, 1877 in Cranberry Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and died September 08, 1974 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California.

Notes for JENNIE MAY BAUM:

As a teenager, Jennie spent some time in North Dakota where her father, Joel, had purchased a big farm.

A granddaughter of Jennie's remembers that she raised chickens and would travel around to neighbors' homes and sell eggs and also butter that she had churned.

Jennie died of "quinsy" (strep throat). She had been deathly ill, but the doctor was unable to come to the homestead, the roads being blocked by snow. Her granddaughter remembers the big black hearse that was at the funeral.

The obituary for Jennie is as follows:

"Mrs. Jennie Mae Farringer, aged 45, wife of Fred N. Farringer died at the family home at Hill City at 10 P.M. Saturday night after an illness of 2 days.

Mrs. Farringer was the daughter of the late Joel Baum and Mrs. Elizabeth Baum. She was born November 6, 1877 in Clarion County. The deceased was a member of the Oil City Free Methodist Church.

Besides her husband, the following children survive: Arnold of Oil City, Mrs. John (Eyla) Linamen of West Monterey, and Bertha, at home. Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Baum, lives near Kossuth, as does a brother, Clem Baum of Oil City, and three sisters.

Funeral was conducted from the Hill City Methodist Church with Rev. Hoover in charge. Burial took place at Brandon Cemetery."

Notes for FREDERICK NEWTON FARRINGER:

As a young boy, Fred worked on his parents' farm. He met Jennie on a sled riding party. They lived in a house in Cranberry, making a living by Fred drilling wells in the oil fields. The church was an important part of their lives.

A recollection of Fred's daughter, Eyla, is as follows:

I remember when Mother died, and Bertha wrote and told me she had something to tell me. I couldn't imagine what it was. Dad was dating Alice Elder. I went to the telephone and tried to call him to come home. John pulled me away from the phone. Wouldn't that have been a scream for all the party [line] owners to hear, for every receiver would of come down. I cried, went down and told Aunt Lizzie Ziegler and got her all upset. Poor Dad was so lost and lonesome he was almost beside himself. He lost interest in everything. Put the farm up for sale. It was terrible. John's oldest sister tried to talk some sense in me. She said, I had my family. Dad had nobody and needed someone.

Fred's obituary reads as follows:

"F. Farringer Funeral Rites Announced

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday in the Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home for Fred N. Farringer, 97, former resident of Cranberry.

Mr. Farringer, a former farmer in this area and an employee of Oilwell Division of U.S. Steel Corp. in Oil City at one time, died Sunday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Mr. Farringer had last worked in this area as a custodian at Cranberry High School before moving to California.

He was a member of the First Free Methodist Church of Oil City. The pastor of the church, Rev. James Grant, will officiate at the funeral services. Interment will be in the Brandon Cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday.

Preceding Mr. Farringer in death was an infant daughter, Elsie."

16. EYLA BELLE8 FARRINGER (JENNIE MAY7 BAUM, JOEL6, LEVI5, JOHN4, JOHANNES3, JOHAN PETER2, JOHAN THEOBALD1) was born February 25, 1902 in Hill City, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and died November 24, 1998 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. She married JOHN WALLACE LINAMEN Abt. 1920 in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, son of JAMES LINAMAN and MYRA ADAMS. He was born May 01, 1898 in West Monterey, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and died November 03, 1970 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California.

Notes for EYLA BELLE FARRINGER:

Eyla was named after an old girlfriend of Fred's. They lived in Cranberry.

When Eyla was a small child, her parents took her to a Sunday School picnic. Always active, she climbed up onto a table and was found eating out of a can of beets between her knees. She and Arnold (her brother) would catch tadpoles in their dinner pails and put them under the chicken incubator to grow frogs. They had tea parties using mountain berries. Arnold would play train, and he would make Eyla do all the work. Their parents never knew about the time they tried to drown the cats in the creek. They had two dogs, Baldy and Gyp. One time Baldy followed Mom to church. Arnold said (loudly), "Mom! Mom! Baldy came to see Jesus!"

Eyla was known for her strong will and determination. She was primarily self-educated, being an avid reader. She only received the equivalent of an eighth grade education. Her first memory of school was getting mad and leaving for home. She loved to learn, and in particular, she liked arithmetic and spelling. She remembers enjoying geography on Friday afternoons. Her childhood friends were Ruth Heckathorn, Nellie Ferrin, Eber Stuffy, Milton French, and Clarence Frazer. They would play ball and tag. The boys would chase the girls with fishing worms and the girls would hide in the outhouse.

Eyla had a love of fashion. As a girl, she loved wearing red sweaters. Her mother would dress her in layers of clothes in the mornings before she left for school. She would stop at a neighbor's house on the way, take them all off, and then put them back of on her way home that afternoon.

The homestead she grew up on was on an oil lease. Her room was the spare room at the top of the stairs. She would have nightmares that someone was coming up the stairs. She continued to have the nightmares, even after she was grown.

One of her favorite childhood activities was going to the park and riding the Merry-Go-Round. She would try and catch the brass ring so she could get a free ride. Eyla was a very social individual, and her favorite memories as a teenager was time she enjoyed being with her friends.

After Eyla was married, they would go to her parents' house for Christmas. After her mother died (when Eyla was 21), it didn't seem like Christmas anymore. After that they went to Bertha's.

When she was about 30 years old, John became sick with Parkinson's disease. It was during the Depression. Eyla had to worry about finances and having enough food for her children. It was a very difficult time for her. She had to be patient and depend on the faith that she held so dear. There were still times she felt entirely alone and at a loss for which way to turn for help. As a result of having lived through the Depression, she was frugal the rest of her life.

Eyla would be best remembered for her intensity in caring for people and for her never ending sense of humor. The following is an excerpt from a letter she wrote in October 1984 regarding the impending second marriage of her son, Harold:

"I am just keeping quiet and hoping and praying that whatever happens will be O.K. Bertha, when she's facing any kind of a problem, always wants to die. I never feel that way, for look what I might miss, and no doubt they will always need my good advise (sic) whether they like it, or even accept it. I've seen many times if they had taken my advise they would be better off. I told Gene one time, just to think what it would cost him, if he had to pay an attorney for all the advise I give him. He said (God forgive him), Mother if I'd take all your advise, I'd need an attorney...

I told Ruth several times while Maxine was sick, that if either had to go, I would rather see Harold go first, for I thought Maxine could handle death better than Harold. Knowing Harold's disposition and emotions, he always took everything very hard, John was that way...

So I'm keeping quiet. If Harold would of asked me, no doubt I could of give him some good advise, on how long to wait, her

age, the color of her eyes, etc., but he didn't... "

Eyla was also known for pranks she would play on people and for her storytelling.

Eyla was always current in political events. In her 70's, during the Watergate scandal, she got so upset (being a devout Republican and Nixon fan) watching the trials on television, that her stomach became agitated. She took a spoonful of Pepto Bismol to help feel better, but in her distraction, accidentally took Calamine lotion, which resulted in a bigger problem. Eyla's mind was active into her nineties.

Notes for JOHN WALLACE LINAMEN:

John and Eyla met at church, when John and her if he could walk her home. Eyla admired John for his strong faith and sound character. For recreation, they would go to parks.

They were married in the parsonage at the church in Franklin in 1920. She wore a light grey dress with ruffles over pink taffeta (she didn't know it was customary to wear a white dress). John wore a brown suit. All of their relatives came. There were so many preachers in attendance, Eyla told her mother it was like a revival. Among their wedding gifts, they received dishes.

After they were married, they lived with relatives until they finished building a new house. During their early life together, it seemed to Eyla that his parents and family were always depending on them financially. To make a living, John worked in the coal mine and delivered mail. They earned about $500 per month. It cost about $2,000 to build their home. Stamps cost $.02, bread was $.10 for a loaf, and milk was $.10 per quart.

For entertainment, they went to church. Eyla worked with the youth of the church. Every night they would play games or have weenie roasts or picnics. The church forbid them to dance, drink or go to movies or shows.

John and Eyla moved to California in the 1950's.

When he was a toddler, he walked to the schoolhouse and took pencils out of the desk drawers. As he grew older, he was known for playing tricks and for his quick wit.
