Joel Baum Elizabeth Jane Starr
Joel Baum was born September 05, 1853 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and died December 02, 1920 in Venango County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Levi Baum and Rebecca Maurer Baum. Joel married Elizabeth Jane Starr between 1870 - 1880, daughter of Daniel Starr and Christina Mitchell. She was born April 03, 1853 in Ninevah, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and died July 03, 1926 in Cranberry, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Joel's granddaughter, Eyla Farringer recalled that after Joel and Elizabeth were married, they bought a large farm in North Dakota and became quite wealthy. Life in North Dakota was difficult--Joel told stories of terrible blizzards when he had to use a guide rope to get to and from the barn. Elizabeth brought the children back to Pennsylvania (she didn't like North Dakota). Eyla said that Joel supposedly remarried 4 or 5 times. He married Goldie (subsequent research has shown that her name was Katie) after 1889 in North Dakota. Katie was killed in North Dakota when the horses ran away with the buggy and threw her to her death. She may have been pregnant at the time of her death. She died on April 26, 1900. In the 1900 U.S. census, Joel is widowed, residing in Dover, Griggs County, North Dakota, with daughter Tina, son Harvey, and five servants. Joel and Elizabeth had at least five children: David, Tena, Rebecca, Jennie May, and Clem. Joel had at least one son, Harvey, by Katie and another daughter, Lucille Elmira, mother unknown.
