Notes for Etta:

Elizabeth Farringer Sheakley, daughter of William Arnold and Florence Huff Farringer, has often told the story of Aunt Ettie (Mrs. John Abraham Lincoln) Huff and Eyla Farringer Linamen (retold by Diane Sheakley Isaacson):

Uncle Linc (a tall man whom Elizabeth (Betty) says resembled Abe Lincoln) and Aunt Ettie (very short) lived near Great Grandpa (Frederick Newton) and Great Grandma Jennie's home. The Farringers and Huffs were among the ten families who shared a telephone "party line."

One day, Aunt Eyla phoned Aunt Ettie and told her that a visiting preacher was coming for that Sunday's services and that he'd be staying w/ Aunt Ettie & Uncle Linc. Upon learning that, Aunt Ettie went into a dither about preparations for his visit and all that needed to be done between then and the weekend and hung up in order to begin working.

In fact, the minister was coming but he wasn't staying w/ the Huffs. Aunt Eyla told her mother, Great Grandma Jennie, about her phone call to Ettie and that Ettie had believed her. GtGma told Aunt Eyla she was to call Ettie back immediately and tell her that she (Eyla) had fabricated that tale, just to get a rise out of Ettie. Aunt Eyla phoned Ettie, but Ettie was in such a state that she launched into a tirade about what she had to do to be ready for the preacher's visit that Aunt Eyla couldn't get a word in. At some point, Aunt Ettie must have run out of steam and Aunt Eyla confessed.
